AGING OF FURNITURE ITEMS & HOW TO USE THEM WISELY.

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building
the new” -Socrates

‘Change is inevitable’ and most of us are in the constant need of changes to avoid the monotony in our lives. Even though sometimes getting out of your comfort zone seems like a huge task it is
manifested at times. The same happens when it comes to the furniture items in our homes. A typical Indian home most often has multiple such furniture items that are old and we probably feel they need to be thrown out but we either have some emotional connect or some memory attached to it or it is probably in a very good condition but just does not feel usable in the current scenario. Some of these items might be age old timeless pieces but then we don’t feel like they’ll be apt to the overall theme in the house. Some we might feel useless due to changes in lifestyle. However there are some ways we can Repair, Remodel, Rehabilitate and Reuse these pieces to their utmost use.
Here’s how !

Repair and Restore:

We get used to the look of some old objects. While some items get used so much that they end up being worn out while some others just need a little bit of freshening up to make them as good as new. We can easily repair and restore them by maybe just changing the paint, or sanding and then polishing it up to restore its look. We used a rusty old metal chair from the 1970’s sanded its rust using a 220 grade sand paper to get a smooth and uniform surface and spray painted it with a rust guard spray paint in the shade 39 Black. And it was good as new as though it was never used. We also added a cushion on its seating to enhance comfort.

Remodel and Renovate:

Altering the look helps but in some cases we might need to make a few alterations. For example you might have an open shelving rack which has glass shelves with a wooden framework but you don’t find it usable anymore as its gone out of trend and also because you previously thought you might be able to maintain its cleanliness but now it just seems to be too much of a hassle. Now you don’t need to throw it out. We can simply Remodel and Renovate it and put it to good use. This is also known as Adaptive Reuse. How ?

Now in this case you not only need to change its look but you also need to consider its functionality we can solve both of the issues. We can put on alternate shutters to it so that the look is also not compromised while you don’t need to maintain it as much as a completely open shelf as now only a part of it is open. The contrasting shutters give it a chic, elegant and modern look while fulfilling its functionality.

Rehabilitate and Refit:

Some furniture pieces can be such that they might not feel fit to use due to major lifestyle changes and we might simply find it easy to discard of such items however in our case this particular furniture item was an antique piece. It was an age old wooden trunk used for storage and transportation during earlier times as the users were on a constant move due to their job
requirement. But currently was just not in use and was simply eating up the space. We decided to
rehabilitate and refit it to put it to use rather than just eating up dust. We sanded the surface with a 150 grade sanding paper and then used PU polish with a little bit of a stain as the original wood was ‘Shisam’ a very costly and durable wood. We also added 4 Studs with a glass top as the Living room required a light feel to the space to make it look more spacious.

These are some of the ways we can create top notch pieces using old furniture items laying around in our homes and save some of our overall cost. This is something that we personally believe in that rather than throwing away things which is an easy task we can rather put it to a good use and that to sustainably.
